ACT-1 Group founder Janice Bryant Howroyd is a multi-million dollar entrepreneur at the helm of the largest women-owned workforce management company in the United States. With $ 1.1 billion in net sales, her business made her the first black woman to own a 1billion business.
Looking back on her career, she says she recommends any young person to follow some basic principles.
Janice Bryant Howroyd calls these three tips the “ABC’s of Life” and says they’ve been key to her huge success.
1. Ask the right questions
Nobody starts their career knowing everything. That’s why Janice Bryant Howroyd says it’s important for young professionals to ask the right questions and listen carefully to the answers and advice they are given.
“Questions you do not ask may not give the answers,” she says. “And you will never get the answers if you do not listen.”
Research by Alison Wood Brooks, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School and Hellman faculty fellow, found that people who ask questions become better managers and get better jobs.
“Compared to those who do not ask many questions, those who do are better loved and learn more information from their conversations with their partners,” she adds.
2. Be where you say you will be
To succeed in your career, Howroyd says it was important “to be where you say you will be, when you say you will be and how you say you will be.”
She says that while it is easy to rely on your technological devices to tell you where and when you should be somewhere, it’s up to you to make sure you arrive on time, prepared and in the right frame of mind.
“You alone can determine how you present yourself and I think it’s really important to put a lot of emphasis on how you are in the present moment,” she says. “This includes preparation, your attitude and sometimes even resources or funding [from] the simple support of anyone helping you at home.”
Today, online networks and Slack corporate channels have become common forms of communication. However, Howroyd warns that if you’re not careful, these communication tools can do more harm than good to your career.
“We are all aware of what happens when someone wants to send a tweet or comment on social media and believe that they have expressed themselves to the world,” she says. “It’s a very flat form of communication.”
Instead of having your message misconstrued via a social platform or online chat, Howroyd recommends that you practice “full circle communication” in which you always talk directly to people.
“In fact, for those of you who still use e-mail, one of the things I’ve done in my business is:” If you’re talking about someone in the business by means of an email, copy them on, “she says.” Let’s keep the communication very clear, very honest and very complete. ”
It can be difficult to know what advice to take early in your career. But Howroyd says the guidelines “will get you a lot of places in life” and will “make sure you get there in a dynamic way.”
