Nigeria Internet Users Increases to 123.5 million – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that the number of people using the internet has increased significantly.

Comparing the number of people with access to the internet as of January 2019, the commission explained that the number had risen with 9.2 million within nine months.

It added that to the number of Nigerians with access to the internet increased in October.

Data released by the commission shows that 114.3 million internet subscribers recorded in January and rose to 125.5 million in October.

Within the same period, active mobile voice subscribers grew from 174,012,136 to 180,386,316.

The import of this is that 91% of Nigeria’s 198 million population now have access to telecommunications services.

While MTN Nigeria still holds a larger chunk of the market, with 67,348,858 subscribers (which translate to 36.93%), Globacom has 51,137,642 subscribers, while Airtel has 49,650,155 subscribers.

According to the commission, there are 49 individual internet service providers currently operating in Nigeria and 274,717 subscribers get their connection from these 49 service providers.

According to Statistica, in 2018, Nigeria had 92.3 million internet users. The margin is projected to grow to 187.8 million internet users by 2023. The internet penetration amounted to 47.1 per cent of the population in 2018 and is set to reach 84.5 percent in 2023.
