Why Nigerian Plastic Surgeon Anuoluwapo Adepoju was Suspended

As the trend of cosmetic surgery in Nigeria continues to grow, a recent mishap during a plastic surgery has led to the suspension of Lagos-based plastic surgeon, Anuoluwapo Adepoju, whose operations have allegedly resulted in the death of her patient Nneka Onwuzuligbo, the 2013 winner of Face of Democracy Transformation in Nigeria.

In response to the incidence, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has indefinitely suspended the said surgeon.

MDCN took the interim disciplinary action against Dr. Adepoju, owner of Med-Contour, a plastic surgery hospital, on Monday, pending the determination of her case with its disciplinary tribunal.

Adepoju operated on her patient on December 31, 2018, and the news of her patient’s death first went viral in February 2019.

The Charges

Dr. Adepoju is also currently being investigated over suspicion of illegal activities and alleged evasion from an investigation into the failed plastic surgery.

She is also being charged for failing to comply with the summon by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

Despite the charges,  Dr. Adepoju continues to share photos and videos of several successful cosmetic surgeries she had done, the positive feedbacks and patient makeovers on her hospital’s Instagram handle which boasts over 74,000 followers.

The self-confessed body contour specialist and mother of two is also an Instagram celebrity who openly flaunts her curves.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is gaining acceptance in Nigeria on an exponential level. The citizens are shifting from a lot of negative perception towards the trend. This can be linked to the rate at which Nigerian celebrities are surgically modifying their bodies. Some of the celebrities in the country who have allegedly had some surgery done are Tonto Dike, Ini Edo, Toke Makinwa, Annie Idibia, and others.
