3 Steps to Master the Art of Persuasion

The ability to convince people to share your point of view can be priceless. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a professional trying to pitch an idea, negotiate a contract, decline some task or motivate a team, your ability to persuade people is paramount.

So how do you master the art of persuasion? Here are three ways you can become a guru at getting people to tow your line.

1. Learn About Them

It’s easier to convince people if you already know what they think about the idea you’re trying to passing across. This way you can actively address their concerns and help them see the bigger picture.  Getting some background information about your client, colleagues, employees or boss will go a long way in helping you understand how they think and communicate. For example, If you know your client has had a bad experience with a product, you need to be ready to go the extra mile to explain how a similar product you’re offering will provide a better result.

However, it is inappropriate to look into another person’s personal life in order to obtain background information. What you want to know is how that person’s past experience, exposure, and education will influence how they receive your information. With this awareness, you will try to ensure that they have a good experience, and you will present your suggestions in such a way that they do not fear getting the same negative experience.

3. Tap into Their Emotions

Studies have shown that emotions play a part in the decision-making process. How people feel about things affects their judgement. People’s feelings will either work in your favour or against you and they are more likely to vote against you if they are unsure about your proposals.

Illustrate the value of your proposition in a confident manner. People would view you as inept if you lack confidence when voicing your thoughts. If you aren’t optimistic or confident, you won’t convince anyone.

Present your ideas using some real-life examples or stories to help you connect with your audience. Don’t go overboard with emotions. You want to strike the right balance by matching their enthusiasm.

3. Use Repetition to Get their Attention

Most people today have developed a way of filtering unsolicited messages. So it does not matter how enthusiastic you are with your message or how convincing you put it, you’ll need to bring the idea in front of your audience as much as possible. This way they’ll learn to trust your opinion and possibly subscribe to what you’re proposing.
