Egypt’s Rapport with China Births Africa’s Tallest Building

Egypt held a topping-out ceremony yesterday for its 385-meter-high Iconic Tower built by China in the country’s New Administrative District, which will be the tallest building in Africa when completed. This skyscraper joins what will be a breathtaking view in Egypt’s Central Business District (CBD).

At the ceremony, the Egyptian Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Essam el-Gazzar declared, “This is the most important building in modern Egypt, which marks our country’s latest achievement.”

The Iconic Tower, located 50 kilometres east of Cairo, Egypt, is the most prominent skyscraper in the China State Construction Engineering Corporation’s CBD project (CSCEC). The CBD project covers a total area of around 505,000 square metres and includes 20 new high-rise buildings as well as certain municipal initiatives.

Hossam Berry, structural manager of the DAR Supervision Company in Egypt, expressed his gratitude to the CSCEC, saying, “Since the construction of the tower’s core tube began started in April 2019, workers and engineers have been working around the clock to finish the project.”

Chang Weicai, general manager of CSCEC Egypt said the Iconic Tower is symbolic of friendship between Egypt and China because it has allowed Chinese and Egyptian engineers to share their expertise with modern construction technologies.

Egypt’s new administrative capital is intended to move significant government institutions from Cairo, which is home to around one-fifth of the country’s 100 million people and is becoming increasingly congested and overcrowded.
