It’s often said that it’s a lot harder to succeed here in Africa than in most other parts of the world. We live in a continent plagued by poverty, bureaucracy and several unnecessary roadblocks that make living a lot more difficult. While you might not have control over certain challenges such as the economic harshness in your country, your attitude and mindset could also be holding you back. Here are some reasons why you’re not successful.
1. You’re Lazy
Every truly successful person puts in the work to get to where they are. It is life’s principle, when you work hard at something you stand a higher chance of excelling at it. Thomas Jefferson said, “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have”.
Consider that some of the excess time your spend on leisure activities can be used in taking action on your dreams. Thomas Edison said, “We often miss opportunity because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work”. You need to break out of the circle of laziness, otherwise don’t complain that you’re not rich or successful.
2. You never finish what you start
If you’re usually starting new exciting things and quitting halfway, it’s time to re-evaluate your goals. You cannot attain success if you don’t commit to a long-term plan. When you trust in the value of a project, you’ll be willing to give it time and effort. Gary Ryan Blair put it right when he said, “Be the hero of your own story. Show the world the quality of your character, the strength of your resolve and the size of your heart by finishing strong”.
3. You’re not business-minded
This is when you freelance or sell items as a side hustle, but never treat that endeavour like an actual business. To you, it’s just extra bucks, so you do a lot of freebies and never take growth seriously. The truth is, if you’re relying on this source of income for daily needs, it’s height time you started treating it as the profitable business that is it.
4. You focus too much on money
If your primary aim of starting a business or career is to become a billionaire, then you’re making a huge mistake. Focus on creating value for people and the money will follow. Like Albert Einstein said, “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value”.
5. You lack passion
You need to go for things you love to do. If you’re in a career or business that you’re not deeply invested, it’ll be easy to quit or completely lose interest. When you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll never have to search too hard for the strength to get out of bed in the morning and keep moving, no matter the challenge. Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”.
