UN Reappoints Amina Mohammed as Deputy Secretary-General

The United Nations – UN has reappointed Amina Mohammed as the Deputy Secretary-General. This was announced in a statement released by the United Nations secretary-general, António Guterres.

She will continue her role as the Deputy Secretary-General in a second term. Her leadership aided the UN’s conceptual transformation, which member nations required to embrace the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN Secretary-General applauded Amina Mohammad’s leadership of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group and her desire to strengthen collective outcomes and maximise the effect of the UN development system on the ground.

He says, “Over the last five years, the United Nations Sustainable Development Group was strengthened to enhance global leadership and oversight for the development, and also established a strengthened United Nations Resident Coordinator system as the foundation of a more effective development system”.

From our robust response to the socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis; through a boost in climate action and unprecedented momentum for Financing for Development; to her strong emphasis on coherence across humanitarian, political and development action – her role was instrumental in keeping the SDGs alive at a country level and protecting the Paris Agreement, despite significant headwinds”, he says.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms Amina Jane Mohammed, Chairs the United Nations Sustainable Development Group. Before assuming the duties, she served as Minister of Environment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, where she oversaw the country’s climate action and environmental protection activities.

Amina Mohammed served as the Special Adviser to former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Post-2015 Development Planning.

She served as Special Adviser on the Millennium Development Goals for three successive Nigerian governments before joining the UN, offering guidance on challenges such as poverty, public sector reform, and sustainable development, as well as coordinating poverty reduction measures.

Amina Mohammed began her career in Nigeria, where she worked on designing schools and hospitals. She worked as an advocate for increased access to education and other social services before entering the public sector, where she progressed through the ranks to become a senior adviser.
