Top 8 African Countries with the highest Internet Speed

The percentage of people using the internet in Southern Africa in Q1 of 2021 was 59.5% higher than the global average.

The growth of the internet and technology and its global adoption has provided humanity with incredible benefits. But as the rest of the world is innovating fast, African countries are struggling to catch up at a snail speed due to slow internet speed and low internet penetration. 

However, the World Bank plans to help the continent achieve universal connection by 2030, and its effort is already bearing fruits. In 2020, Africa had about 525 million internet users. This number is far higher than Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. 

In the first quarter of 2021, Southern Africa had the highest internet penetration rate at 62%. The percentage of people using the internet in this region was significantly higher than the global average (59.5% ). 

Eastern and Middle Africa, on the other hand, had the lowest percentages, at 24% and 26% respectively. Here are five African countries with the highest internet speed.

Egypt

According to Speedtest Global Index, Egypt tops the list of African countries with average internet speed. The country is ranked 86th in the world at 35.67 megabits per second (Mbps) for download, 7.03Mbps for uploads and 13ms for latency. It is also 88th in the world for mobile speed at 19.34Mbps for download, 6.58Mpbs for upload and 32ms for latency.

Côte d’Ivoire

Côte d’Ivoire comes second and is ranked 95th in the world at 31.42Mbps for download, 9.11Mbps for uploads and 6ms for latency. It is also 131st in the world for mobile speed at 9.62Mbps for download, 6.25Mpbs for upload and 27ms for latency.

South Africa

South Africa ranks 97th in the world at 29.60Mbps for download, 23.74Mbps for uploads and 7ms for latency. It is also 54th in the world for mobile speed at 33.26Mbps for download, 7.52Mpbs for upload and 24ms for latency.

Ghana

Ghana ranks 101st in the world at 27.16Mbps for download, 14.88Mbps for uploads and 11ms for latency. It is also 134th in the world for mobile speed at 7.33Mbps for download, 7.25Mpbs for upload and 31ms for latency.

Seychelles

Seychelles ranks 109th in the world at 22.13Mbps for download, 15.79Mbps for uploads and 5ms for latency. 

Senegal

Senegal ranks 114th in the world at 20.36Mbps for download, 8.10Mbps for uploads and 7ms for latency. It is also 104th in the world for mobile speed at 15.98Mbps for download, 8.37Mpbs for upload and 21ms for latency.

Mauritius

Mauritius ranks 117th in the world at 19.88Mbps for download, 8.72Mbps for uploads and 4ms for latency. It is also 83rd in the world for mobile speed at 20.59Mbps for download, 8.14Mpbs for upload and 19ms for latency.

Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso ranks 118th in the world at 19.71Mbps for download, 6.12Mbps for uploads and 11ms for latency. It is also 124th in the world for mobile speed at 11.54Mbps for download, 7.55Mpbs for upload and 23ms for latency.
