The growth of the internet and technology and its global adoption has provided humanity with incredible benefits. But as the rest of the world is innovating fast, African countries are struggling to catch up at a snail speed due to slow internet speed and low internet penetration.
However, the World Bank plans to help the continent achieve universal connection by 2030, and its effort is already bearing fruits. In 2020, Africa had about 525 million internet users. This number is far higher than Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
In the first quarter of 2021, Southern Africa had the highest internet penetration rate at 62%. The percentage of people using the internet in this region was significantly higher than the global average (59.5% ).
