Having a university degree is quite an impressive achievement. However, Google thinks university degrees are useless and not needed criterion to qualify for a job. Instead, your knowledge and skills on an in-demand job are what gets you through the door.
Google has made known its plan to disrupt the university degree system, and while this might seem daunting, the result will be a non-traditional education system.
For a long time, bagging a University degree was a prestige. It was a key factor for success, but all that has changed at the turn of the 21st century.
The evolution of the internet and technology seemingly made realise that university degrees are useless. Surveys and research have shown this to be nothing but an illusion.
Google introduces a new way of getting a degree at less of the University’s price. This new certificate program takes six months to complete, and from careful evaluation, the degree is equivalent to a 4-year University degree.
The senior vice president of global affairs at Google, Kent Walker, briefly states in a blog post: “We will consider our new career certificates as the equivalent of a four-year degree for related roles.”
Let’s dive deeper into why Google thinks University degrees are useless.
Graduates get no improvement in critical thinking skills
“I think college is basically for fun and to prove that you can do your chores, but they’re not for learning,” Tesla founder Elon Musk told an audience at the Satellite 2020 conference in Washington DC.
He said exceptional ability is the major requirement needed in a company, which cannot be gotten in school.
Google Digital Courses further buttress this logic to be true. This course allows you to develop critical and logical skills. Studies show that these courses provide skills for success faster than a University degree would.
A University degree will get you skills that are advantageous in the job market, but Critical Thinking is unlikely to get updated.
According to Laszlo Bock, co-founder and CEO of Humu analysis, “humans are by nature creative beings, but not by nature logical, structured-thinking beings. Those are skills you have to learn.”
A degree demonstrates a skill, not an expertise
“In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you,” says Warren Buffett.
Candidates who work for Google are considered eligible based on their skills and knowledge and not a University Degree.
This mainly shows that a degree doesn’t guarantee expertise in the required field. A degree is regarded as a piece of paper to show what skill you have acquired, but your knowledge and ability to handle a situation are considered the major criteria for handling a given task efficiently.
A University degree doesn’t tell one’s pattern of behaviour. Hence, grit tops the priority list for securing a job at Google and further emphasises why Google thinks University Degrees are useless.

You don’t need a degree to be talented
You do not need a university degree to prove you are talented. Billionaires who never got a degree have proven this to be true. While Google isn’t big on University degrees, it does not say people should not acquire it anyway.
“You don’t have to be a genius or a visionary or even a college graduate to be successful. You just need a framework and a dream,” says Micheal Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies.
There is quite a lot of misconception on what your university degree will be getting you. While it is required for many careers, a specific form of knowledge has to be actively pursued.
A good percentage of people learn a new skill online and go ahead to become professionals with no 4-year degree attached to it.
Google’s certificate programs are designed to get you the skills and knowledge needed for a job and save you from long lengthy job searches a University degree is likely to get you.
A University degree won’t show if you knew what you claim to have studied in school while getting a job on Google or any tech company only requires you to prove your knowledge and skill.
Google doesn’t have a lengthy job requirement. Without a University degree, having a good structure of zeal and passion can get you the job faster. Google overlooks the educational qualification and opt-in for someone with grit.
You may not need a university degree to get a job at Google or any tech company; it should not be a reason not to get a University Degree.
It has been established that a degree and a skill are two sides of the same coin. A degree may get you a job, but you would need the skill to help you grow further, while a degree is instrumental to a person’s personality development. It can also make a person more confident in his approach.
