The Nigerian music industry has dramatically evolved. There was a time when a couple of millions placed an artist on the pinnacle of entertainment. However, contemporary Nigerian music stars like Wizkid, Davido and Burna are changing the narrative and raking in billions from international concerts.
Let’s have a look.
Wizkid – Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun
Wizkid, known as Ayodeji Balogun, is one of the Nigerian afrobeat music stars who has made billions from various international concerts.
In November 2021, Wizkid made N5.2 billion from his ‘Made in Lagos’ three-day concert in London O2 Arena. He sold off all the tickets for the 20,000 capacity centre.
The ticket varied from $108 to $270 for various sections and locations at the venue. The ground section held over 5,200 people for an average price of $239 per seat.
The lower section had over 8,800 seats at $170 each. The top deck had about 6,000 seats at an average price of $250.
He earned over N1.7 billion on the first day and N5.2 billion for the three days.
Recently, Wizkid was paid $1 million (N600 million) to perform at the upcoming Rolling Loud music concert in September 2022. The event is normally held in the United States and will be done for the first time in Canada.
Wizkid will be headlining the third day of the three-day concert.
Davido – David Adeleke
David Adeleke, known as Davido, earned over N1.352 billion from his show at O2 Arena in London in March 2022.
The concert ticket was sold in three categories: $54.49, $190.76, and $235.65, while the average price of a ticket was $160.31.
With a seating capacity of 20,000 and an average ticket price of $160.31 (N67,106.45), he made about N1.32 billion.
Burna Boy – Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu
Burna Boy, also known as Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, gave a spectacular two-hour performance last month at the Madison Square Garden (MSG) tagged “One Night in Space”.
Through this, he made history by being the first Nigerian music star to headline a show at Madison Square Garden (MSG) and selling out all tickets.
On average, a ticket cost as little as $350 or as much as $2,125. Using an average sales metric of $350 multiplied by the entire capacity of 20,789 units, he made $7,276,150, which is over N3 billion.
Aside from the 20,789 persons that attended the event, it attracted over 81,000 YouTube views worldwide. Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada are among them.
This makes Burna Boy one of the artists to perform at the (MSG) garden and sell out the tickets. Artists such as Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Adele, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Justin Bieber, and Mariah Carey.
