7 Nigerian States with the Highest Number of Registered Voters

With the upcoming general election in Nigeria, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been on its toes to ensure the number of registered voters is high. INEC aims to bump the figure from 84 million in 2019 to over 100 million by 2022.

As of the second quarter of 2022, the Commission has over 10.4 million new voters registrations, while over 8.6 million are already completed.

Out of the over 10.4 million new registrations by INEC, over 6 million of the registrees are Nigerian youths. Thus, accounting for 70% of newly registered voters. The men accounted for over 4.2 million, women over 4.3 million and people with disabilities (PWDs) 67,171.

Here are the states with the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria as of the second quarter of 2022.

From the track record of Lagos state, it has always had the highest number of registered voters. In 2015, the state had over 5.8 million, while in 2019, it had over 6.57 million.

This year is not left out as INEC registered 371,760 new voters as of June 27, making the cumulative in the state to be over 6.94 million – the highest number in the country.

Lagos and Kano are hooked at the rib. Both states retain their position of highest registered voters. In 2015 and 2019, the northern state had over 4.9 million and 5.45 million registered voters, respectively.

The state registered about 380,582 new voters in late June this year. Combined, Kano has over 5.83 million voters.
