Some of the most visited countries in the world can be found in Africa. The ambience in some African countries has seen many visitors troupe there to experience the breathtaking environment. This, in turn, has seen to the development of the tourism sector and serves as a source of revenue.
Though the sector experienced a hiccup during the COV-D 19 pandemic, it has always been a primary source of revenue on the continent. From the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation’s report, tourism contributed 7% to the continent’s total GDP and $169 billion to the economy in 2019.
Though the sector experienced a decline in 2020 and 2021, it is expected to bounce back this year. From the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) report, 61% of tourism professionals are optimistic that the sector will pick up this year. 42% expect a rebound in the industry in 2023.
64% believe that the sector will attain the same international arrivals record of 2019 in 2024 or later. From the United Nations World Tourism Organisation report, here are the most visited countries in Africa according to the International Tourist Arrival data.
South Africa

South Africa ranks first among the most visited countries by tourists in Africa. The southernmost country in Africa in 2020 had about 3.8 million international tourists, making it the most seen.
This can be attributed to the different fascinating locations in the country. Some of which are beaches, landscapes, and wildlife. The country also has the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Africa.
Morocco

In the first half of 2020, Morocco had 3.4 Million visited tourists. This indicates the comeback of the sector from the pandemic. This is four times higher than the number recorded in the same period of 2021 and represents 63% of the number of people in 2019.
In the first five months of 2022, Morocco generated $1.99 billion (MAD 20 billion) from the sector. Compared to 2021, this represents 173%.

Tunisia

In the year’s first half, the sector’s revenue increased by 51% compared to 2021 to 1.1 billion dinars or about 336,288,112 euros.
The Ministry of Tourism in Tunisia revealed that more than a million tourists visited the northernmost country in Africa. This represents a 128% increase in comparison to the same period of 2021.
The country generated more in 2019, recording 5 billion dinars and about 9 million visitors.
Eswatini

Just like in other African countries, tourism is thriving in Eswatini. The industry became prominent during the apartheid period in South Africa. The history of the country further shaped the tourist attractions in the country, primarily through its culture.
In 2020, Eswatini had 345,300 tourists and accounted for 7.3 million.
Mauritius

At the beginning of 2022, Mauritius had over 92,752 tourist visitors compared to 2021, when the country had 2,461 in the same period. It also recorded 63,008 tourists in June compared to 70,462 in May.
Though on the low side compared to other countries, the country’s government plans to have about one million tourists by the end of 2022.
