Meet Kyari Bukar, Silicon Valley-Trained Tech Guru

Kyari Bukar has over 30 years of experience in information technology, financial services and business analytics. He is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Trans Sahara Investment Corporation, a Private Equity company with its headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria.

He has a distinguished career in engineering and technology, having served as executive director at FSB International Bank Plc, which is now Fidelity Bank. 

He was also the former managing director and CEO at Central Securities Clearing System Plc and ValuCard Nigeria (Unified Payments Ltd), which are both in Lagos.

Prior to working with FSB International Bank, he had several positions with the Hewlett Packard firm in the United States of America, including Manufacturing Development Engineer, Marketing Program Manager, Senior IT Consultant, and Manager.

Early life 

Kyari Bukar was born in Maiduguri. He studied Physics at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. 

Speaking in an interview, Bukar said, “All the members of his family were very science-oriented. I did my National Youth Service at Shell in Lagos and then travelled to the United States, initially to North Western University for my graduate studies studying Nuclear Physics”. 

Later, Bukar went to Oregon State University and enrolled in a degree in Nuclear Engineering. Hewlett-Packard further employed him, initially as a participant in the inkjet technology division.

He is also an alumnus of Lagos Business School, Wharton Business School, and Harvard Business School.

Coming back to Nigeria 

The former CEO of FSB International Bank, Mohammed Hayatudeen, had a key role in getting Kyari Bukar on board at the Bank when he returned to Nigeria. First, he was employed as General Manager and afterwards as Executive Director.

“My portfolio was around electronic banking, IT and operations. By virtue of my position, I was appointed an alternate director at ValuCard. Eventually, I became the first Nigerian CEO of ValuCard and led the transformation of the business from a loss-making firm to a very profitable enterprise,” he say.

Then, he joined the Nigerian Stock Exchange’s affiliate, the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) and quickly rose to the CEO position.

He retired in 2016 to concentrate on the several projects he was working on. He currently serves on several boards.

Kyari Bukar was previously the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG). 

He currently serves on several other Boards; Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd; Member, Nigerian Youth Alliance of Atlanta, Georgia; and leader of Employee Business Contribution Network (HP), just to name a few.
