Isa Hayatu Chiroma is an Adamawa state-born Nigerian attorney and a professor of law at the University of Maiduguri. President Muhammadu Buhari named him the Director General of the Nigeria Law School in February 2018.
He served as the Nigeria Law School’s assistant director in Yola from 2011 until 2016 before being appointed.
Isa Chiroma was significantly involved in the Nigerian Law School’s curriculum and methodology overhaul during his time there in Yola.
He participated as a resource person in the Law School’s several academic retreats and was a key member of the Externship Committee in 2012, which was charged with reforming the attachment programme.
In 1988, Isa Chiroma was called into the Nigeria Bar. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, ranked at the 133 plenary session meetings in 2018.
He graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a Second Class Upper Bachelor of Laws degree in 1986. In 1991 he got a Master of Law, and in 2005 he got a Ph.D. in Law from University of Jos.
Isa Chiroma is a radical reformer of legal education who believes that all levels of legal education should emphasise an integrated knowledge, skills, competencies, and values.
In Nigeria, the movement for clinical legal education was founded by Isa Chiroma.
He is a member of the Federal Polytechnic Mubi, Adamawa State, Governing Council, and Privileges Committee for Selection of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in Academics.
He serves as the vice president of Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI) Nigeria.
The advocacy for clinical legal education, legal education reform, justice education, and access to justice is led by NULAI Nigeria.
Additionally, Chiroma participates actively in the Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE). One of the earliest university-based law clinics in Nigeria, the University of Maiduguri Law Clinic, was founded and directed by him.
On the Yola campus of the Nigerian Law School, Chiroma also established the first law clinic.
Isa Chiroma actively participates in the Nigerian Bar Association and is aware of how the Bar can influence changes to legal education and the legal profession. He had previously participated in the selection of Senior Advocates of Nigeria by the legal practitioners’ privileges committee.

His areas of expertise were access to justice, human rights, humanitarian law, environmental law and policy, law and development, and ethics in the study and practice of law.
As a member of the African Law Association of Germany, the Global Alliance for Justice Education, the International Bar Association, the Nigerian Institute of Mediators and Conciliators, the Nigerian Bar Association, the Society for Corporate Governance, the Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a Notary Public, Chiroma has overseen numerous research projects based on his areas of interest.
