Thanks to advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, some jobs may change while some may not exist anymore. This fact was further grounded by the 2020 World Economic Forum report that there will be a shift in how specific jobs are performed.

From the survey, by 2025, there will be an increase in unwanted job roles. This will reduce the workforce from 15.4% to 9% and the birth of new positions from 7.8% to 13.5%.

This shows that approximately 85 million jobs will be extinct while more than 97 million new ones will be created. These new jobs are tailored to the evolving advanced technologies.

Some of the new and emerging jobs are Data Analysts and Scientists, Internet of Things Specialists, AI and Machine Learning Specialists, Process Automation Specialists, Information Security Analysts, Robotics Engineers, Software and Application Developers, and Digital Transformation Specialists.

To remain relevant, you need to know some of the jobs that will not exist and upskill your portfolio. Let’s look at some jobs that will be redundant by 2023.

Banking Jobs

The banking sector is not left out of tech logical inclusion. As of 2021, in Africa, there are 576 fintech companies. The futuristic prospect in the subsect resulted in an increase in its funding. This makes it the startup category that received funding on the continent. This resulted in increased digitalised banking and fewer people going to the bank.

This self-banking system led to the loss of jobs by thousands of people and the gradual extinction of the sector.

Cashiers

Artificial intelligence is gradually making the reality of a cashless society and self-service feasible through self-checkout. Though yet to be a norm in certain parts of the world, it will take over the shopping process in five to ten years, making the cashier role redundant. This way, people make their purchases faster with little or no interaction at all. Machines will regulate the whole process.

Amazon, a multinational company, has already incorporated this into its system. Its Amazon Go stores use motion-sensing technology and cameras that allow buyers to take products off shelves and leave the stores without waiting in line.

This makes the brand the first store to use a Just Walk Out Technology. The technology is the same with self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning.

The technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Later, we’ll send you a receipt and charge your Amazon account.

Travel agents

The integration of technology in aviation resulted in a gradual increase in online booking platforms such as Travelstart, Airbnb and Wakanow. The flexibility and fast delivery of travelling services have, in turn, reduced the patronage of travel agents.

Though gradually, it will no longer exist in five to ten years. This extinction of this and some other jobs were once predicted by platforms such as Staff.com.

According to the blog, “When you visit a travel website, you speak into the computer, and then the website will answer any questions they have to clarify your travel schedule. 30 seconds later, it finds the cheapest alternatives.”

With the effectiveness of these platforms, such as Wakanow, the first online travel agency in Nigeria, Africans, like their counterparts in the world, are pivoting to the new travelling trend.

Printing press operator

Gone are the days when the only way to get information was through print media. Now, social media and online websites are the sources of information. This trajectory is due to the rise in digital media and technology. This has changed the way people access information, news and entertainment.

Bureau of Labor Statistics report on employment in the printing and related industries revealed that there will be a decline of approximately 19% of jobs between 2019 and 2029. This was based on the 19% decline the industry experienced from 2009 to 2019.

Also, Editor & Publisher and the Pew Research Center revealed that the weekday circulation of U.S. daily newspapers in 2000 was 55.8 million. This dropped to 24.2 million in 2020.

Administrative role

The development of advanced administrative tools and technology is gradually seeing administrative roles such as personal secretary and assistant replaced by virtual assistant roles. This will continue to improve due to its flexibility, and the need for people in the field will continue to reduce.
