Hoodlums Attack Supporters at Atiku Abubakar’s Campaign

Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, held at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe state, left some of his supporters with different degrees of injury. The injury was sustained during a fight between the state-local gang named Kalare Boys and the supporters of the People Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential aspirant.

During the attack on the Pantami Stadium Road, about three people were injured, and about three vehicles – a bus, a car, and one Keke NAPEP, were destroyed in the process.

According to the report, it all started when Atiku left the stadium through the second gate. The gang, dangerously armed with local weapons, attacked the unsuspecting supporters and intercepted the Pantami market and government house. Due to the new development, police personnel from the first gate were dispatched to protect people who ran back to the stadium for safety.

Although some people were affected by the chaos, the state police Public Relations Officer, Mahid Abubakar, said he could not confirm the attack as he was at a programme.

Also, the publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Usman Muritala, said he was unaware as he was excluded from the campaign plan.

Usman Muritala said, “I was not on the podium and was only there as an official of the party, so I sat like every other person to watch the whole show. There is a division in the party, a very big one.”

PDP’s presidential campaign hurdles

Since the onset of the presidential rally, Atiku Abubakar’s supporters have been met with strong opposition from groups perceived as hoodlums or members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party. During the presidential rally in Maiduguri, Borno state, about 74 people were injured and properties destroyed by hoodlums.

Also, PDP’s supporters were attacked during the presidential campaign held in Kaduna state in October 2022. According to the tweet of Senator Shehu Sani from the Kaduna Central Senatorial District, “Thugs just invaded the Atiku Rally venue in Kaduna with swords and machetes.”

Despite the hiccups, Atiku promised to end Boko Haram during his speech at Pantami stadium. He said, “I promise you that if you elect me, what we have started, I will ensure that the electricity that will be provided from Dakin-Kowa Dam will be sufficient for the entire Northeast. I will enhance farming so our farmers can farm during rainy and dry seasons.

Also, I will return peace to the state because, without peace, all these pledges I made cannot be actualised. I will wipe out Boko Haram. Boko Haram is nothing. We have wiped out Boko Haram in Adamawa; what will stop us from wiping out Boko Haram in Borno or Yobe or anywhere they are in this country?”
