Wike Assures PDP Will Win All Positions in Rivers State

Political sceptics and PDP members who oppose the same-faith ticket but back a presidential candidate from the north have come under fire from Governor Nyesom Wike.

The Rivers State governor made the statement yesterday at the special dedication ceremony for the Rivers State PDP 2023 general election rallies, which was held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt. The governor was making a reference to the PDP national leadership.

Wike argued that people who engage in such doublespeak and attempt to dupe a select group of credulous individuals are aware that their actions offend well-meaning Nigerians who desire a united nation that fosters national cohesiveness.

“You play on people’s intelligence; you say Nigeria is not ripe for Muslim-Muslim ticket, I agree. But Nigeria is ripe for presidency to remain in one zone? I mean, just look at the insult. You blow hot and cold.”

Wike advised individuals who denounced the same-faith ticket to be aware that Nigerians as a whole believed it was improper to retain the presidency in the north after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight years in office.

“Most of you just sit there, you don’t ask yourselves questions. Somebody continues to sell this kind of cheap ideas,” he added.

He added, “Your party wants the presidency to go to the same zone where president Muhammadu Buhari is coming from. Who is cheating who?”

The governor of Rivers State also spoke, emphasising to the church the importance of voting participation. But it shouldn’t become so involved, in his opinion, that it becomes political actors or political parties’ cannon fodder.

Wike called with the church to exercise caution and rebuff politicians who attempt to mobilise them by feigning a religious conflict.

“It is not now that politics have come, you want to come and tell the church a different story for your own personal interest. We have to be careful so that the church is not destroyed.

Because, all of us, for example, we are Anglicans, I will not allow anybody, for his selfish interest to destroy the church of Nigeria. I will not allow that.”

Furthermore, Wike issued a warning that his administration will not tolerate any further political-motivated wanton destruction of life and property in the state.

In the state, he urged PDP members to rebuff deliberate attempts by some unhappy politicians to incite them ahead of the general elections in 2023.
