Dangote Group has distanced itself from rumours making the rounds that its $19 billion refinery project has been commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari. In a statement, Group Chief, Branding & Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina clearly stated that the 650,000 barrels per day (BPD) Refinery project was not among the President’s programme on projects to be commissioned.
The statement was released in reaction to reports that the multi-billion dollar refinery was scheduled for commissioning on January 24, 2023. Dangote in the statement also listed projects slated for commissioning in Lagos by the President. They include Lekki Deep Sea Port; the 32-Metric Tonnes Lagos Rice Mill, Imota; and the 18.75km Eleko to Epe T Junction Express road.
According to the statement, John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Onikan, Blue Line Rail (Phase 1) (Marina to Mile 2); Groundbreaking for the Blue Line Rail Phase 2 (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko), and MRS Lubricant, a private project in Apapa were also listed for commissioning.
Dangote Group also noted that the refinery will be commissioned before President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR leaves office in May 2023. The group further noted that the commissioning will not be a secret affair as the public will be duly informed and invited to the epic event.
Buhari’s commissioning of infrastructure projects
President Buhari was in Lagos State for a 2-day official visit to inaugurate significant projects undertaken by the State Government and the private company, MRS Holdings Limited. Buhari applauded the state’s government and attributed the thriving businesses across Lagos to the successful collaboration between the federal, state government and private organizations.
Expressing hopes that the recently inaugurated Lekki Deep Sea Port and Imota Rice Mill would produce over 300,000 jobs, Buhari expects these projects to tackle the problem of unemployment in the country.
Located in Lagos’ Lekki Free Zone the refinery, the refinery is billed to take responsibility for over half of Africa’s refining capacities.
