Twitter Tweaks Feature to Favour Only Blue Subscribers

Microblogging Platform, Twitter has introduced a new feature that will attract more Blue subscribers. The feature allows blue subscribers to tweet in a longer form of up to 4,000 characters, as against the normal 280 characters limit.

In a tweet, Twitter announced that long-form tweets will be available for all users to read and retweet. It said, “while only Blue subscribers can post longer Tweets, anyone and everyone can read them. you can reply to, retweet, and quote Tweet a longer Tweet, no matter if you’re a Twitter Blue subscriber or not.”

The microblogging site also explained that long tweets will be capped at 280 characters on the timeline, with a “show more” prompt. Users can clean the prompt to read the whole tweet.

What is Twitter Blue?

Twitter Blue refers to one of  Elon Musk’s strategies to monetize the social media company. To shake up the platform dynamics after his April 2022 acquisition, Musk introduced a paid subscription to Twitter Blue. The paid subscription adds a blue checkmark to your account and grants you access to features like Edit Tweet, and upload video files at 1080p quality, among other perks.

Android users are required to pay $8 monthly for Twitter Blue, while iPhone users will need $11 to get enlisted for Twitter Blue.

Why was the long-tweet feature introduced?

Asides from the obvious reason, which is to attract more subscribers to Twitter Blue, Twitter introduced this feature to meet the need of those who require more than 280 characters to express themselves. It said:

“need more than 280 characters to express yourself? We know that lots of you do… and while we love a good thread, sometimes you just want to Tweet everything all at once. we get that. so we’re introducing longer Tweets! you’re gonna want to check this out. tap this 👉.”

Blue Subscribers in the US are the first set of tweeps to enjoy the new feature. While some of them welcomed the Twitter character Increase, others kicked against it. They maintained that they preferred the 280-character limit.
