Peter Obi & Oyedepo: Things You Should Know about their Controversial Phone Call

In a leaked private phone which was claimed to have happened on the eve of the February 23 presidential election, an alleged voice of Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) was heard pleading with Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide to help canvas Christian votes.

The alleged tape which described the election as a religious war has stirred different controversy on the internet. Let’s look at some of the controversies associated with the alleged phone call.

Bishop Oyedepo’s influence

The initial stir caused by alleged voice tape stems from the influence of Bishop David Oyedepo, the forerunner of the Living Faith Church.

Oyedepo is one of the most respected pastors in Nigeria and the world at large. He is also the wealthiest pastor in Nigeria and one of the richest in the world. Aside from his riches and wealth, he is also very influential.

Oyedepo is also from Kwara State, recall that the alleged voice note recorded that Obi pleaded with the bishop to canvass votes for him from Kwara State.

Obi’s visits to Oyedepo’s church

Obi who has made it a call of duty to visit churches during his presidential campaign attended the annual Living Faith Church Programme, Shiloh late last year at the church’s headquarter in Ota, Ogun State.

Members of the church were reported to have erupted into loud cheering as Pastor Abioye,  Living Faith Vice President, announced his presence. A lot of people saw Peter Obi’s visit to shiloh as wanting to get an endorsement from the church.

Obi and Oyedepo’s relationship

Peter Obi was reported to have visited Bishop Oyedopo at the Church’s headquarters, Sango Ota, Lagos State on his 61st birthday on the 19th of July 2022.

Several people saw the labour party presidential candidate’s visit as a way to formally inform him about his presidential ambition as well as to seek blessing from the respected bishop.

Recall that Bishop David Oyedepo has been a strong critic of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and had described the current administration as being corrupt and wicked.

The alleged tape manipulation

Valentine Obienyem, the media aide to Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP),  has said the leaked clip allegedly involving Obi and Bishop David Oyedepo, was doctored.

A social media user also analysed the clip as being AI generated. He further said a tool known as Adobe Premiere Pro reveals that the audio has indeed been manipulated and has been compressed many times from one platform to another while also being stripped of its meta data.
