Achraf Hakimi: Things You Didn’t Know About the Moroccan Football Star

Achraf Hakimi Mouh is a Moroccan professional footballer who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and the Morocco national team. He is currently in the news after his wife, Hiba Abouk, filed for divorce and found him with no property during the court proceedings.

The PSG star player had registered all his properties and monies, ranging from his houses, cars, clothes and jewelry in his mother’s name. This includes millions in salary deposited. This showed about 80 percent of what he owns registered in his mother’s name.

Hakimi’s background

Hakimi was born in Madrid, Spain, to Moroccan Parents, Hassan Hakimi and Saida Mouh in 1998. He grew up in Spain and started his career at the age of eight with a team in Getafe called Colonia Ofigevi.

Hakimi football career

Hakimi started his youth career with Real Madrid’s youth academy, playing for Real Madrid Castilla in 2016 and progressed through the ranks to make his first-team debut in 2017. He was later loaned to Borussia Dortmund on a two-year contract, where he became a fan favorite and established himself as one of the best young talents in Europe, winning the DFL-Supercup in 2019.

In July 2020, he signed with Inter Milan for a reported fee of €40 million, helping the club win the 2020–21 Serie A title before joining PSG in 2021 for €60 million . He has also represented Morocco at various youth levels before making his senior debut in 2016, and has since become a regular member of the national team.

Hakimi’s professional award

Hakimi has won numerous individual awards throughout his career due to his versatility and creative style of playing. This includes CAF Youth Player of the Year: 2018, 2019, Bundesliga Rookie of the Month: September 2018, November 2018, December 2019, Best Moroccan player abroad: 2020–21, 2021–22, and several others.

His versatile style of playing

Hakimi was quick to be considered a dynamic and creative right-sided attacking full-back or wing-back after he was loaned to Borussia Dortmund, and has maintained his creativity over the years. 

Having trained as a winger, he is tactically capable of playing long accurate passes from defence and can also play as a defender due to his physical presence. His style of play helped his country to qualify for the quarter final of the World-cup for the first time in history.

Hakimi in the face of controversy

Hakimi was indicted by an investigating judge in Paris over an allegation of rape, and placed under judicial supervision. Having denied all allegations, he claimed he was a victim of an attempted racket. He was however banned from contacting his alleged victim but allowed to leave French territory.

Hakimi’s marriage

Hakimi got married to a Spanish actress Hiba Abouk of Libyan and Tunisian descent in 2020. The couple have two sons, born in 2020 and 2022 respectively. On 27 March 2023, Abouk came out with a statement on her Instagram account confirming that the couple had separated, and that they were awaiting divorce proceedings.

The reason for the divorce was trailed to Hakimi’s rape allegation which is still under judicial proceedings.
