Fani Kayode: His Collated Facts from February’s Poll

Femi Fani-Kayode, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, has released some facts about the 2023 presidential election ahead of the inauguration of the president-elect, Bola Tinubu.

Despite the losers of the election challenging his victory in court, Tinubu is scheduled to be sworn into office as President, May 29.

Recall that the the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Tinubu the winner of the presidential election after he polled the highest number of votes. Let’s look at the historical facts that he listed.

His take on President Buhari

Fani Kayode believes Mohammadu Buhari, the president of the federal republic of Nigeria will be the longest-serving civilian and democratically-elected Northerner that has ruled in the country.  He also said Buhari is the only Core Northerner, that is, the only person from the North East or North West, either through the military or civilian regime that did not die nor removed in a military coup while on seat.

In addition, It is the first time that a democratically elected Muslim President, Buhari will hand over power to a democratically elected Muslim President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

The president-elect and vice president-elect victory.

Fani Kayode claimed that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect will be the first Southern Muslim to be sworn in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria while Kashim Shettima, he vice-president elect will be the first Kanuri to be sworn in as the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Kayode also said it’s the country’s first time that a Muslim President and a Muslim Vice President have been sworn in as a democratically-elected President and Vice President respectively.

He also stated its the first time that a Presidential candidate and later President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been opposed, denigrated, vilified, humiliated, misrepresented and insulted by members of the opposition and even within his own party and yet he managed to win the primaries, win the election, overcome against all odds, come out victorious and would be sworn in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Also, both a muslim President and a Muslim President-elect enjoyed and celebrated Sallah at the same time.

Peter Obi’s involvement

Fani Kayode said it was the first time Peter Obi, the Labour party presidential candidate and an Igbo presidential candidate has won a presidential election in Lagos, Plateau, Nasarawa and the FCT. 

According to him, it is the first time in the history of Nigeria’s politics that the Church played such an active and pivotal role in a presidential election by openly endorsing and supporting one candidate, Peter Obi which he later lost despite their support.

In addition to that, Kayode said that Peter Obi, a presidential candidate, had described a presidential election as a “religious war” and asked a Bishop to use his Church and influence members of the Christian Community to deliver a state for him.

Nigeria’s historical facts

Fani Kayode said the country would first be experiencing the majority of people and leaders in the North insisting on a power shift to the South. Also, Nigeria is first seeing a strong and formidable collaboration and unassailable political alliance between the leaders and people of the North and the South West.

Kayode stated that the winning presidential ticket had no Fulani or a Christian, yet winning is the first of its kind.

Datti Ahmed statements

Fani Kayode mentioned the statement of Dati Baba Ahmed, the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party which was a threat to the President, the Chief Justice of the Federation and the Chairman of INEC would be happening for the first time in the country’s history. According to him, Datti said that “no-one would be safe”, calling for military intervention and making treasonable statements on national television in the event of a President-elect being sworn in.

He also said that Datti bursting into tears and openly weeping  on national television because of the attacks he received from his opponents and what was written about him in an essay is a first occurrence.

Atiku’s vote

Fani Kayode pointed out that Atiku Abubakar, a  Fulani presidential candidate who scored the lowest number of votes in the North Central and could not win one state in that entire zone is happening for the first time. Also, Atiku as a PDP presidential candidate lost  in Rivers State and could not make 25% of the valid votes.
