The Nigerian Government On Thursday,  announced its intention to implement new policies in the telecoms sector aimed at promoting the utilization of clean and sustainable energy sources. This initiative aims to minimize the carbon footprint and foster environmental sustainability.

The Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, revealed this information while participating in a roundtable discussion in Lagos, alongside representatives from academia, industry, and other stakeholders. Mr. Ubale Maska, the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services at NCC, represented him during the event. 

Prof. Danbatta emphasized that the forthcoming policy aims to provide a framework for telecom service providers, enabling them to play a significant role in building a more eco-friendly and sustainable future.

Transitioning towards greener energy sources

During an event titled “Refocusing Academic Research towards Alternative Clean Energy: Panacea to Paucity of Energy in the Telecoms Sector,” Prof. Umar Danbatta expressed his confidence in the clean energy policy, stating that it will not only benefit the environment but also spur innovation and generate new business opportunities within the telecoms industry. However, he emphasized that achieving the desired outcomes will require collaboration and partnerships with academia and other stakeholders.

World of knowledge, research, and training 

Prof. Umar Danbatta highlighted the critical role of academia in driving research and innovation to transform industries. He acknowledged academia’s expertise, knowledge, and insights as invaluable assets in developing viable alternative sources of clean energy that the telecommunications industry could utilize for sustainable energy supply. 

The primary focus of the NCC chief was to redirect academic research towards practical alternative clean energy solutions for the telecom sector. He emphasized the need for academia’s research to explore the potential of these energy sources, address challenges, and devise strategies for their effective implementation in the industry. Additionally, he sought to promote research that leverages digital technology to enhance the livelihoods of Nigerians.

The NCC chief emphasized their acknowledgment of the significance of clean energy in the telecom industry and their dedication to supporting regulatory initiatives that promote the adoption of renewable and ethical energy sources. He sees this as a substantial opportunity for the telecom sector to actively contribute to the global energy transformation. 

He called for collective intelligence to devise actionable strategies that would shape the future of Nigeria’s telecom industry. By aligning research efforts with alternative clean energy sources and harnessing digital technology, he believes they can revolutionize the sector in the country.
