Who’s Aishah Ahmed, the Deputy Gov of CBN in Police Custody

Aishah Ahmad, Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is a key figure in Nigeria’s financial landscape, responsible for promoting financial system stability. With over 22 years of experience in corporate finance, Ahmad’s portfolio is as impressive as it is extensive and she also serves as Chairman of the Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC). 

However, her illustrious career has recently taken an unexpected turn, as she finds herself in police custody as a result of accusations related to questionable transactions in acquiring shares of Polaris Bank, Titan Bank, and Union Bank. This sudden development has sent ripples through Nigeria’s financial and social communities, raising questions and concerns that are eagerly awaiting answers. She took on the role of supervising Financial System Stability in 2018

Aishah Ahmad plays a significant role at the Central Bank of Nigeria. Since her appointment as the Deputy Governor in charge of Financial System Stability in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, she has been responsible for leading efforts to promote a stable financial environment in Nigeria. 

This role is central to the CBN’s mission, as specified in the CBN Act. As part of her duties, she is a member of the Governing Board and Committee of Governors at the CBN. She also serves as Chairman of the Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC), a not-for-profit organization offering training, consulting, and research services to the financial services sector.

Her wealth of experience started at Diamond Bank

Before her tenure at the CBN, Ahmad served as Executive Director of Retail Banking at Diamond Bank PLC. With over 22 years of corporate executive and finance experience, her career spans multiple financial institutions, including NAL Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, and Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, among others.

She has an impressive educational background, holding an M.Sc. in Finance and Management from the Cranfield School of Management in the UK, an MBA in Finance from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and a B.Sc. in Accounting from the University of Abuja, Nigeria. She is also a member of prestigious financial organizations such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Association and the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Association.

She is an advocate for female and youth empowerment

Aishah Ahmad is well-known for her efforts in advocating female and youth empowerment. She volunteers at SOS Children’s Villages in Nigeria and was the former Chairperson of the Executive Council of Women in Management, Business & Public Service (WIMBIZ), a leading NGO focused on women in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Aishah’s current situation in police custody

The deputy governor of CBN was taken into custody and is currently in the hands of the Department of State Services (DSS) with allegations of engaging in shady dealings involving the purchase of shares in Polaris Bank, Titan Bank, and Union Bank. Aishah is currently under interrogation regarding the source of the $300 million used to finalize the acquisition of Union Bank by Titan Bank.
