Nigeria to Experience Three-Day Nationwide Thunderstorms and Cloudiness, Says Meteorological Agency

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts that the country will experience cloud cover, rain, and thunderstorms from Saturday through Monday. The agency made this announcement in its weather report, which was published on Friday in Abuja.

The forecast indicates that the northern region is set to experience periods of cloudiness and intermittent sunshine this Saturday, along with the possibility of morning thunderstorms in states like Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. As the day progresses, localized thunderstorms are anticipated in areas including Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, and Gombe.

NiMet forecasts that the north-central region will have a cloudy sky in the morning, with chances of rain and thunderstorms in areas like the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kwara. As the day progresses, scattered rain and thunderstorm events are expected to occur in locales such as Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Kogi.

The forecast reads, “Cloudy atmosphere is expected over the inland states of the South and its coastal states in the morning with chances of intermittent rains over parts of Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers and Ebonyi states.”

NiMet forecasts periodic rain showers for areas including Lagos, Ekiti, Edo, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, and Delta, while also anticipating intermittent sunshine and morning thunderstorms in the northern states like Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara. Additional thunderstorm activity is expected in regions such as Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Adamawa.

Airline operators to consult NiMet for future operations

As a result, the agency urges airline operators to regularly consult NiMet’s weather updates and alerts for efficient operational planning. Given the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfalls leading to flash floods, the general public is advised to exercise caution and refrain from traversing flooded areas, whether driving or on foot.

The agency also encourages disaster management teams, governmental bodies, and individuals to take proactive measures to minimize potential loss of life and property throughout the rainy season.
