Armed Police Intimidate Student Protestors at Ambrose Alli University Over Tuition Hike

On Wednesday morning, Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo State, stationed armed police officers at its main entrance. According to eyewitnesses and social media users who shared photographs, the police presence was aimed at discouraging student leaders from protesting a recent increase in tuition fees.

Earlier reports indicated that the university administration had been planning to expel 16 members of the students’ union leadership for spearheading the protests against the fee hike. According to obtained documents, a list of the targeted student leaders had been distributed among top university officials, including the Vice Chancellor and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellors for Academic and Administration.

Sources also revealed that the university management had contacted the parents of the affected student leaders, utilizing the Department of State Services (DSS) to exert pressure on them. Reportedly, the armed police gathered personal information on the students and reached out to their parents, advising them to instruct their children to abandon the protest against the fee increase.

However, according to university spokesperson Otunba Mike Aladenika, there are no plans to suspend the students involved in the protests.
