Amazon Set to Debut its Online Marketplace in South Africa by 2024

Amazon, the global e-commerce giant, has unveiled plans to launch its online marketplace in South Africa by 2024.

This move is set to reshape the e-commerce landscape in the region, offering a fresh platform for local businesses and consumers.

A New Opportunity for Local Sellers

Starting today, South African businesses can register on Amazon.co.za, signalling the company’s commitment to the region.

Robert Koen, the general manager for Amazon in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, expressed enthusiasm about the launch.

He stated, “We eagerly anticipate the debut of Amazon.co.za in South Africa. This will empower local entrepreneurs, brand owners, and sellers to expand their businesses with Amazon, offering exceptional value and convenience for South African shoppers.”

South Africa’s Current E-commerce Landscape

Currently, the e-commerce scene in South Africa is dominated by Naspers-owned Takealot, boasting a gross merchandise value of R27 billion.

Other significant players include Makro, Checkers Sixty60, and Mr Price.

Although online sales currently account for just 2% of total retail sales, factors like high internet penetration and changing consumer behaviours due to COVID-19 are predicted to boost this figure to approximately 6.8% in the coming years.

Rumours about the tech giant’s foray into the South African market began circulating in early 2022, with an initial launch date set for February 2023.

In the lead-up to this announcement, Amazon has been actively recruiting in South Africa, filling roles in merchant development, software, and operations.
