Born on October 23, 1963, in Kaduna, Yekini’s rise from a life riddled with challenges to becoming a football icon is truly inspiring.

Starting from humble beginnings, Yekini worked as a welder and mechanic before his undeniable talent caught the attention of football scouts. 

He began his professional journey with ‘UNTL FC’ in Kaduna in 1981 and later showcased his prowess with the Shooting Stars, netting an impressive 45 goals in just 53 matches.

In 1983, Yekini’s outstanding performance on the field earned him the ‘African Footballer of the Year’ accolade, a first for any Nigerian player. His contribution was instrumental in propelling the Shooting Stars to the finals of the African Champions Cup the following year.

Yekini’s significant achievements

Yekini played for clubs across Spain, Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Greece, Portugal, and Switzerland. One of his significant achievements was winning the Bola de Prata (Silver Ball) during the 1993-94 season with the Portuguese side, Vitória Setúbal.

Representing Nigeria’s national team, the ‘Super Eagles’, Yekini’s contribution was pivotal in their 1994 World Cup qualification. 

His memorable celebration, holding the net and shedding tears after scoring Nigeria’s first World Cup goal, is an iconic moment in football. 

Over his 14-year stint with the Super Eagles, Yekini netted 37 goals in 58 appearances, setting a national record.
