Nollywood actress and producer, Genevieve Nnaji, is reported to have sold her recently released blockbuster movie “Lionheart” to movie site, Netflix, for $3.8m, making her the first Nollywood billionaire.
Lionheart, the movie, which is the first Nollywood movie to feature on Netflix, a record which many Nigerians and celebrities have congratulated the star actress for has received favourable reviews from many audiences and channels.
In response, the Nigerian actress took to Instagram to appreciate the support for Lion Heart :
Lionheart initially was not accepted in Nigerian cinemas due to alleged industry controversies.
A statement from the ‘Lion Heart’s team alleged that the “powers that be” (distribution companies) have refused to show the movie in their cinemas.
The statement further alleged that one of the major distributors, who had agreed to show the movie, backed out of the deal after being “arm-twisted”.
Lionheart tells the story of Adaeze Obiagu (portrayed by Genevieve Nnaji), who wants to substitute for her father, Ernest Obiagu (Pete Edochie) when he can no longer run his company due to health issues. Her father, however, asks his brother Godswill (Nkem Owoh) to substitute for him, and Godswill and Adaeze have to work hard together to save the company from a huge debt and to not lose the company to the businessman Igwe Pascal (Kanayo O. Kanayo).
