Nigeria is not only the most populous country in Africa, but it’s also home to some of the most expansive and impressive universities on the continent. 

With 274 universities as of 2024, the country’s higher education landscape continues to evolve, and one interesting way to measure that growth is by looking at land size.

Beyond academic prestige and enrolment numbers, the physical size of a university reveals how much room there is for growth both literally and figuratively. 

These universities are sprawling institutions with space for research centers, hostels, farmland, and even mini-communities. Here’s a look at Nigeria’s largest universities by land size.

University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) – 15,000 Hectares

Taking the crown as Nigeria’s biggest university by landmass, UNILORIN sits on a massive 15,000 hectares in Kwara State. That’s not just large by Nigerian standards, it’s one of the biggest university campuses in Africa. 

Established in 1975, UNILORIN is known for its academic consistency, having avoided strikes for several years. The land gives room for everything from agriculture to innovation parks, making it a major player in Nigeria’s education sector.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) – 13,000 Hectares

OAU in Ile-Ife, Osun State, is not just rich in history but also in land. With 13,000 hectares, it has one of the most beautifully designed campuses in Nigeria. 

Founded in the early 1960s and renamed in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, this university is often praised for its architecture, environment, and strong academic culture. The space allows OAU to be both a place of learning and a sanctuary of nature.

University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) – 11,824 Hectares

UNIABUJA operates on a split campus system, with a mini-campus in Gwagwalada and a permanent site that spans nearly 12,000 hectares along the Abuja Airport road. 

The school started small in 1990 but has since grown into one of the capital’s most vital academic institutions. With all that land, the future certainly looks promising for UNIABUJA in terms of infrastructure and expansion.

Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA) – 10,650 Hectares

Located in Niger State, FUTMINNA is one of Nigeria’s leading technology-focused universities. It’s known for engineering, environmental science, and ICT-related programs. Sitting on over 10,000 hectares, the university offers not just classrooms but enough space to support real-world technological experimentation and research.

Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) – 10,000 Hectares

Agriculture needs land and FUNAAB has plenty of it. Covering 10,000 hectares in Ogun State, this university is dedicated to agricultural science and development. It was established in 1988 after a restructuring of Nigeria’s educational system, and today, its land is used for both academic and practical farming.

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) – 7,000 Hectares

ABU in Zaria, Kaduna State, is one of the most respected universities in Nigeria. Established in 1962, it operates two campuses: Samaru and Kongo. With a combined land size of 7,000 hectares, ABU is more than just a school—it’s a city of learning. The school continues to produce top-notch professionals in law, science, arts, and engineering.

Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) – 4,048 Hectares

FUTO, located in Imo State, is the leading technological university in the Southeast and South-South regions. With over 4,000 hectares, the school offers enough room for innovation hubs, laboratories, and student housing. Established in 1980, FUTO continues to rise as a center of excellence in engineering and science.

University of Benin (UNIBEN) – 1,748 Hectares

Established in 1970 in Edo State, UNIBEN is one of Nigeria’s premier federal universities. It spans more than 1,700 hectares and includes significant land used for agriculture and student services. Despite some ongoing land disputes, the university remains a major academic force with a diverse student population.

University of Ibadan (UI) – 1,032 Hectares

UI, Nigeria’s oldest university, was founded in 1948. Though smaller in land size compared to others on this list, its 1,032 hectares are rich in history and academic significance. Located in the heart of Ibadan, Oyo State, the institution boasts a well-planned campus, comprehensive libraries, and a legacy of excellence.

American University of Nigeria (AUN) – 2,500 Acres (~1,011 Hectares)

AUN is a private university based in Yola, Adamawa State. It’s styled after American liberal arts colleges and focuses on entrepreneurship, development, and innovation. With more than 2,500 acres, it’s the largest private university by land size in Nigeria and one of the few with facilities that rival top global institutions.

Redeemer’s University – 2,010 Acres (~813 Hectares)

Owned by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Redeemer’s University is another major player in private higher education. It sits on over 2,000 acres and combines faith-based learning with strong academic programs. Located in Ede, Osun State, the university has earned its place as one of the top-ranked private institutions in Africa.
