196-Year-Old Tortoise Predicts South Africa vs Nigeria Clash Tonight
Football fans have seen all kinds of match predictions over the years from supercomputers to celebrity pundits.
But this time, the spotlight has fallen on an unlikely forecaster: a 196-year-old tortoise from Zanzibar.
The ancient creature has made a bold call ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifier between South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and Nigeria’s Super Eagles tonight at the Free State Stadium.
This is a tough clash with high stakes
South Africa head into the tie hoping to return to the World Cup for the first time since they hosted it in 2010. Nigeria, on the other hand, are desperate to bounce back after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.
With both sides in the thick of qualification battles, the pressure could not be higher.
Nigeria currently sit third in their group with 10 points, trailing Benin Republic on 11 and South Africa on 16.
Anything less than victory tonight would complicate the Super Eagles’ path to the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The Tortoise’s prediction
At the Prison Island sanctuary in Zanzibar, home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest living tortoise, visitors recently placed markers for the two countries.
The giant reptile slowly made its choice, leaning toward Nigeria and even “predicting” that the Super Eagles would score twice.
While many may see this as lighthearted fun, Nigerian fans have latched onto the prediction with hope, especially given the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen, who has been ruled out of the clash.
Nigeria’s form under Chelle
Since taking charge, head coach Eric Chelle has steadied the Nigerian side. The three-time AFCON champions picked up an impressive 2-0 victory against Rwanda in Kigali and later drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe in Uyo, thanks to Osimhen’s goals.
In March, they edged past Rwanda again with a 1-0 win, sealed by Wolves’ new forward, Tolu Arokodare.
Still, their inconsistency without Osimhen has left questions hanging over tonight’s game. The team will need to rely on their depth and attacking options to unsettle South Africa’s defense.
Despite the pressure, confidence remains high in Nigeria’s camp. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who plies his trade in South Africa with Chippa United, believes playing on familiar soil will give him an extra edge.
Forward Samuel Chukwueze has also expressed optimism that the Super Eagles can silence the home crowd and leave with three points.
Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana rivalry
This fixture carries extra weight, not just because of qualification math. Nigeria and South Africa have developed a heated rivalry over the years, with their last encounter in Uyo ending 1-1.
Tonight’s clash could decide which of the two nations takes control of their World Cup dream.
Whether the tortoise’s prophecy of “two Nigerian goals” proves true or not, fans can expect drama, intensity, and possibly history at the Free State Stadium.
And if the 196-year-old giant does get it right, maybe animals really do have a nose for football after all.
