Super Eagles Now Coachless as Jose Peseiro Resigns

The Nigerian football community is buzzing with the news that Jose Peseiro, the Portuguese manager, has officially resigned as the coach of the Super Eagles. Peseiro’s tenure with the Super Eagles came to an end after his contract expired on Thursday, leaving the team without a head coach.

Peseiro, who took charge of the Super Eagles in May 2022, has expressed his gratitude and fulfillment in coaching the team. Under his guidance, the Super Eagles achieved a commendable second-place finish at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a heartfelt message, Peseiro stated, “It was a pride and honor to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfillment.”

The former Porto manager’s journey with the Super Eagles was marked by highs and lows. Initially, there were doubts about his ability to lead the team due to his average record and the team’s failure to secure a World Cup ticket under his predecessor, Augustine Eguavoen. 

Peseiro’s start was rocky, with two losses in his first two games. However, he quickly turned things around, leading the Super Eagles to a resounding 10-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe in his third game.

One of Peseiro’s most notable achievements with the Super Eagles was guiding them to the final of the 2023 AFCON. Although they fell short, losing 2-1 to hosts Cote d’Ivoire, the team’s performance was commendable. Peseiro’s impact on the team was evident, as he and the Super Eagles players were honored with national awards and hosted a dinner by President Bola Tinubu upon their return from the competition.

As the Super Eagles now find themselves coachless, the search for a new manager begins. Peseiro’s departure marks the end of an era, but also the start of a new chapter for Nigerian football.
