2027 race: If a Younger Candidate Wins ADC Primary, I’ll Step Aside — Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he is ready to step aside for a younger aspirant if he contests the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary and loses to them.

In an interview published Thursday, Atiku said his focus for now is building the ADC and uniting the opposition rather than declaring a personal bid. He added that if he runs and a younger contender wins the primary, he will accept the result and support the nominee.

The remarks signal a youth-inclusive posture as opposition parties reposition ahead of the 2027 general election. Atiku, who was the PDP presidential candidate in 2023, recently shifted efforts toward the ADC, presenting it as a coalition vehicle for the race.

The ADC has not released its 2027 primary timetable. Analysts say a transparent calendar and a public pledge by all aspirants to accept results would test the party’s promise of internal democracy. Further details are expected as opposition realignments take shape in the coming months.
