3 AI Scams Nigerians Should Avoid in 2025

Technology is growing fast, and so are AI scams. These scams are becoming more common and harder to spot. In Nigeria, as more people use the internet and digital services, the chance of getting tricked by online scams is also growing. It’s important for everyone to know about these scams and stay safe.

Microsoft says AI helps scammers make fake messages, websites, and videos that look real. This makes it easier for scammers to trick many people quickly.

Here are three common AI scams Nigerians should avoid in 2025:

1. Fake Job Offers

Scammers use AI to create fake job ads, fake profiles, and fake emails. They can even do fake video interviews using AI, making the scams look very real.

Nigeria’s IT agency (NITDA) warns people about fake jobs. Job sites should check carefully to stop fake job ads and interviews.

Watch out if:

  • You are asked to pay money to get a job.
  • The job offer sounds too good to be true.
  • You get interview invites by text without proper communication.
  • You are asked for personal information to “verify” yourself.

Always check websites start with “https” and use safe browsers.

2. Fake Tech Support

Some scammers pretend to be tech support and say your computer has a problem. They ask for money to fix it, but it’s a trick.

They might also get remote access to your computer and steal your information or put in bad software.

Microsoft warned about a group using voice calls to trick people into giving access to their computers.

Only trust official tech support. Don’t answer calls or messages you didn’t expect.

3. Fake Online Stores

More Nigerians are shopping online, but scammers use AI to make fake online shops. These sites look real with fake pictures and reviews created by AI.

These fake shops use chatbots that talk to customers to keep them from asking questions or asking for refunds.
