3 Countries That Won’t Play in the 2026 World Cup and Why

The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is already shaping up, but not every nation will get the chance to fight for a spot.

Three countries, Russia, Congo, and Pakistan have been ruled out of the tournament, each for very different reasons.

Russia’s ongoing ban

Russia continues to be sidelined from international football. Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, both FIFA and UEFA have maintained a ban on the Russian Football Union.

This ban extends to all levels, including the men’s and women’s national teams, as well as domestic clubs.

When the qualification draw for the World Cup took place last December, Russia was absent.

Instead, 54 other UEFA members were split into 12 groups to compete for tickets to the 2026 tournament. Unless the ban is lifted, Russia will remain out of global football for the foreseeable future.

Congo suspended over interference

In Africa, Congo has been suspended by FIFA after what the governing body described as serious “third-party interference” in the affairs of the Congolese Football Association (FECOFOOT).

FIFA and CAF officials visited Brazzaville and found problems with how the federation was being run.

For Congo to be reinstated, FECOFOOT must regain full control of its headquarters, stop outside attempts to influence its operations, and allow an independent ad hoc committee to function. Until these steps are taken, Congo will remain excluded.

Pakistan’s football crisis

Pakistan is also missing out, this time over governance issues. FIFA suspended the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) because it failed to adopt a revised constitution aimed at ensuring fair and democratic elections.

The suspension will only be lifted once the PFF congress approves the updated document drafted with FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation.

Pakistan had already struggled in its qualifiers, finishing last in its group, so the suspension has only added to the country’s football woes.

What you should know

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with most matches taking place in American cities.

Defending champions Argentina will aim to hold on to their crown after their dramatic 2022 win over France in Qatar.

For Russia, Congo, and Pakistan, the road to recovery in football will depend less on what happens on the pitch and more on how their federations and governments handle the issues keeping them away from the biggest stage.
