3 Nigerian Lawmakers Who Died Shortly After Taking Office
Nigeria has recently been shaken by the sudden deaths of three lawmakers who passed away not long after taking the oath of office.
Their untimely departures have not only left their constituencies in mourning but also sparked conversations about the demanding nature of public service and the unpredictable fragility of life.
Olaide Adewale Akinremi

Hon. Olaide Adewale Akinremi, fondly known as Jagaban, represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
After winning re-election in 2023, he was sworn in for another term in June. Barely a month later, on July 10, 2024, news of his death broke.
Akinremi’s passing sent shockwaves across Oyo State and beyond. He had built a reputation for connecting with the grassroots, pushing for youth empowerment initiatives, and advocating for better infrastructure in his constituency.
Many described him as a leader whose political journey still had much promise before it was cut short.
Oluwakemi Rufai

For Oluwakemi Rufai, the councillor representing Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos, her entry into politics was brief but impactful.
Sworn in as the only female councillor in her council, Rufai was widely seen as a symbol of progress in gender inclusion and community representation.
Tragically, she died just two weeks after assuming office following a brief illness. Leaders of the Lagos chapter of the APC praised her dedication to service and described her as a “rising star” whose contributions to grassroots politics will not be forgotten.
Her death was especially painful for many women who saw in her a reflection of their growing role in governance.
Zainab Shotayo

Councillor Zainab Shotayo of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area in Lagos also lost her life shortly after taking office. On August 18, she was reported dead, a loss that prompted deep sorrow among colleagues and constituents.
Shotayo was remembered as a passionate voice for her community, someone who spoke boldly about local challenges and worked tirelessly to address them.
In her honour, the council held a special plenary session, highlighting her short but meaningful contributions to public service.
