3 Things Pope Leo is Doing Differently from Late Pope Francis

In the first few weeks of his papacy, Pope Leo XIV has quietly set a tone that’s strikingly different from the fast-paced, hands-on style of his predecessor, the late Pope Francis.

Although they both share a deep concern for peace and reform within the Catholic Church, their methods and personalities are clearly not the same. Here are three major ways Pope Leo is doing things differently.

He’s slower, but thoughtful and less public

While Pope Francis wasted no time shaking things up after his election making bold appointments, announcing where he’d live, and forming advisory groups Pope Leo is taking a more careful route.

So far, Leo has limited himself to public events and quiet observation. Instead of rushing into major decisions or facing the media with spontaneous remarks, he’s sticking to prepared statements.

According to those close to him, Leo prefers to listen first, meet people one-on-one, and understand the weight of the Vatican’s challenges before making his move.

His style is quiet, private, and focused on reflection. For a Church that’s been in the headlines a lot in recent years, this shift in tone is already being felt.

He’s handling vatican finances behind closed doors

The Vatican is facing serious financial trouble, with a reported €83 million shortfall and a huge gap in its pension fund. During Francis’ time, budget concerns were openly discussed, and the Pope was often front and center in talking about Church finances.

Leo, on the other hand, has chosen to stay silent for now. Instead of speaking publicly, he’s reportedly meeting individually with Vatican officials to get a clearer picture. This low-key approach shows his desire to fully understand the situation before making public statements or launching new reforms.

It’s a sharp contrast: where Francis sometimes responded off-the-cuff, Leo is keeping things close to his chest.

He’s returning to tradition with his living arrangements

One of the most visible signs of Leo’s difference from Francis is where he plans to live. Francis made headlines when he chose not to live in the Apostolic Palace, opting instead for a simple room in a Vatican guesthouse.

Leo is expected to do the opposite. Sources say he’ll move into the traditional papal apartments once they’re renovated. That choice, though seemingly small, signals a return to some of the more formal aspects of the papacy that Francis often downplayed.

It’s not about luxury, Leo is known for being modest but rather about his connection to the symbols and structure of the Church’s past.

What this all means

Pope Leo isn’t in a hurry. His early days show a man who prefers to observe before acting, who values tradition without rejecting change, and who leads with quiet confidence.

While Pope Francis energized the Church with his boldness and flair, Leo seems ready to guide it with patience and steadiness. Both paths have their strengths but under Pope Leo, the Vatican is clearly entering a new chapter.
