3 Ways To Help Your Kids Deal With Bullying

Schools have resumed across most schools in Nigeria. As some students start new classes, bullying can become an issue. Bullies are often children who may not have received the proper upbringing and tend to impose their behaviour on others.

Therefore, it is important to protect your children from bullies not only in their schools but also in church and any other places they frequent.

Here are three simple ways you can help your child handle these tough situations:

 1. Open Communication

Please encourage your child to talk about their day and how they feel. Make sure they know they can tell you anything without being judged or ignored. Talking often can help you spot if your child is being bullied and let you help them quickly. Teach your child that it’s okay to tell someone if they’re being bullied. They aren’t being a snitch; they’re standing up for themselves and others.

 2. Teach Them to Be Firm, Not Mean

It’s important for kids to know how to stand up for themselves without being mean. You can practise different situations at home where your child learns to speak clearly and firmly to a bully, using phrases like “I don’t like what you’re doing” or “Please stop that.” Tell them to look the bully in the eye and keep calm. If things don’t get better, they should walk away and ask an adult for help.

 3. Build a Support Network

Talk to teachers, school counsellors, and other parents to make sure your child has friends and adults who will help them if they are bullied. Being part of groups or activities where they make friends can make your child feel safer and less alone. This support can make a big difference.
