36 CSOs Call for Nationwide Protest Against Economic Hardships

36 civil society organisations (CSOs) have called on Nigerians to join a forthcoming protest addressing the escalating issues of hunger and the rising cost of living. The collective plea was outlined in a recent statement issued by the organisations.

The organisations have also appealed to the Nigerian Judiciary and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to protect the rights of protesters.

They propose the creation of a mechanism to prevent and dismiss any oppressive charges that might be brought against participants of these protests.

The statement included several demands, including the reduction of living costs, tackling insecurity, cutting government spending, and initiating crucial reforms in electoral processes, the judiciary, and the constitution.

These issues, they note, are crucial for advancing a robust democracy in Nigeria.

“We are steadfast in our dedication to democratic values and human rights, and we stand in unity with those who choose to engage in peaceful protests,” the group declared.

They also urged all involved parties to maintain a commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
