3rd-Party Insurance Enforcement:Defaulters May Pay N250k Fine
The Nigeria Police Force has begun enforcing 3rd-party vehicle insurance across the country to make roads safer and ensure victims of accidents get compensated. Starting February 1, 2025, all vehicle owners must have valid third-party insurance to drive on public roads.
The campaign started in states including Lagos, Kogi, Delta, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with police watching for uninsured vehicles. This action aims to reduce the number of uninsured vehicles, which complicates compensation after accidents.
In the Federal Capital Territory, Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu stressed that officers should conduct themselves professionally and avoid extorting money from drivers. Lagos State Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, emphasised that enforcing insurance laws is meant to protect people and property.
However, some people worry this enforcement could lead to police demanding bribes because of the high fines for not having insurance. Even with these concerns, police officials insist that the initiative is meant for public safety and not to make money.
As the new rules are put into place, drivers are encouraged to get the required insurance to avoid fines and contribute to safer roads. The enforcement supports the National Insurance Commission’s (NAICOM) efforts to ensure more people comply with insurance laws, with support from the insurance industry.
