4 Key Resolutions Between Tinubu and the NLC on Minimum Wage
Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has committed to raising the national minimum wage to more than N60,000. This decision came after a meeting between the FG and organized labor on Monday night, June 3rd, 2024 at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The announcement was made through a statement signed by several key figures, including the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.
The resolution to increase the minimum wage is a response to the nationwide strike aimed at pressing for a new minimum wage of N494,000, a figure much higher than the government’s initial proposal of N60,000.
In response to President Tinubu’s commitment, labor representatives agreed to reconvene with their members to consider the new proposal. Initially demanding N615,000, the NLC and TUC later settled for N494,000. Here are 4 key resolutions made at the meeting.
Commitment to a Higher Minimum Wage: President Tinubu has pledged to increase the national minimum wage to more than N60,000.
Daily Meetings of the Tripartite Committee: To reach a consensus on the new minimum wage, a Tripartite Committee will meet every day for the next week. This committee includes representatives from the government, labor unions, and the private sector, all working together to finalize the wage.
Labor’s Consultation with Members: Labor unions, including the NLC and TUC, will hold meetings with their members to consider the government’s new wage proposal.
Protection for Workers: A crucial part of the resolution is that no worker will face victimization due to the industrial action.
