5 New US Visa Rules Every Nigerian Applicant Should Know

If you’re planning to attend a U.S. visa interview in Abuja or Lagos anytime soon, now’s the time to pay extra attention. The United States Embassy has introduced a fresh set of rules, and they’re not leaving room for error.

These changes mainly affect how you fill and use your DS-160 form, the core of your visa application process. Miss a single step, and you might not even make it past the gate.

Starting April 22, 2025, the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria are rolling out new guidelines that could make or break your visa application. Here’s what you need to know to avoid costly mistakes.

The Barcode on Your DS-160 Must Match Your Appointment

This isn’t just a suggestion, it’s a rule. The barcode on your DS-160 form must exactly match the one you used to book your visa appointment online. If the numbers don’t match, you’ll be turned away at the entrance. Even if the difference is tiny or unintentional, the system will flag it.

Also, be sure the city on your DS-160 form matches your appointment location, Abuja or Lagos. If they don’t align, your application becomes invalid.

Mismatched DS-160 Forms leads to no interview

Let’s say you used an old DS-160 form or generated a new one after scheduling your appointment, that’s a problem. A mismatched or reused DS-160 will get you denied entry to the visa interview. It’s now an official deal-breaker.

The Embassy isn’t joking around with this, no exceptions, no second chances at the gate.

Double-Check Your DS-160 Early

Don’t wait until the night before your interview to check things. You’re advised to verify your barcode and appointment details at least two weeks ahead of your scheduled date. This gives you enough time to catch and fix any mistakes.

Using a previously submitted DS-160 form, even one that looks fine, is risky. Always generate a new one tied directly to your current application.

Found a mistake? Fix it via AVITS

If you notice an error on your DS-160 form, don’t panic, but act fast. Log in to your AVITS account and submit a support ticket to correct the mistake. This has to be done at least 10 days before your interview.

If you delay, there may not be enough time to update your info, and you might have to reschedule entirely.

You might have to reschedule and pay again

If your DS-160 issue can’t be resolved in time, you’ll need to book a brand-new appointment. And if your visa fee has expired by then? You’ll have to pay again.

To avoid wasting time and money, your best move is to get it right the first time, correct form, matching barcode, and accurate details.
