5 Nigerian States That Attracted the Most IJGBs This Detty December

December in Nigeria is a time for fun, excitement, and reunions, especially for IJGBs (I Just Got Backs) — Nigerians living abroad who return home to celebrate the festive season. Known as Detty December, this period is a combination of music, parties, sightseeing, and family reunions.

Each year, the number of IJGBs visiting Nigeria grows, and with it, the impact on the country’s economy. A recent study conducted by MO Africa Company Limited shed light on the increasing popularity of this phenomenon.

According to the report, between November 19 and December 26 last year, Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos saw nearly 550,000 inbound passengers. What’s more interesting is that the majority of these passengers were Nigerians returning home for leisure and tourism.

The survey covered data from various sources, including airports, hotels, short-let agents, and nightclubs, and revealed the top destinations for returning Nigerians. Here are the five Nigerian states that attracted the most IJGBs during Detty December:

Lagos

Unsurprisingly, Lagos tops the list. As Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos is always a hotspot for both locals and visitors. It is home to some of the best clubs, restaurants, and event spaces, making it an obvious choice for IJGBs. From the vibrant nightlife to the bustling markets and coastal views, Lagos offers an unforgettable experience. The city is known for its energy, with everyone—from DJs to celebrities—coming together to celebrate in style. With its numerous events and gatherings, Lagos is the epicenter of Detty December.

Edo

Edo State, often known for its rich history and culture, saw an influx of IJGBs during the festive period. Many Nigerians from the diaspora took the opportunity to reconnect with their roots and experience the traditional festivities in Benin City, the state capital. Known for its historical significance, Edo offers a blend of cultural experiences, including festivals, arts, and music.

Delta

Delta State is another favorite for returning Nigerians. Known for its beautiful beaches, wildlife, and diverse cultures, Delta attracts those who are looking to relax while enjoying the unique Nigerian experience.

Whether it’s the Otuaro Beach or the bustling markets in Warri, the state offers a mix of natural beauty and modern conveniences. Many IJGBs enjoy the laid-back vibe of Delta, which provides a perfect balance of relaxation and excitement.

Ondo

Ondo State, with its serene environment and beautiful coastline, is perfect for IJGBs looking to unwind. Many Nigerians from abroad head to Ondo for its picturesque beaches and calm atmosphere.

Places like Idanre Hills and the Owo Museum of Antiquities offer a blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty. For those interested in a peaceful yet enriching holiday, Ondo is a must-visit during Detty December.

Ogun

Ogun State offers a perfect mix of cultural heritage and modern entertainment. Many returning Nigerians head to Ogun for its proximity to Lagos, making it an ideal location for those who want to enjoy a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere while still being close to the city’s excitement.

Ogun is known for its artistic legacy, with plenty of art galleries and cultural sites to explore. The state’s many festivals and events also attract IJGBs looking to experience the unique side of Nigeria.

What you should know

Detty December is not just about fun and relaxation; it has a significant economic impact. The survey conducted by MO Africa highlights that the event boosts Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

Kayode Omosebi, CEO of MO Africa, projected that by 2026, with improved infrastructure and security, Detty December could generate as much as $2 billion in foreign exchange. This surge in tourism spending helps to support local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to event organizers and transportation services.

Moreover, the increasing demand for customized tourism experiences and high-end event spaces presents fresh opportunities for the Nigerian hospitality and entertainment industries. This trend of returning Nigerians looking for specialized experiences could be the key to growing Nigeria’s global appeal as a top tourist destination.
