5 Simple Ways to Stay Safe and Cool in Nigeria’s Scorching Heat

Nigeria’s heatwave is not playing. The sun is blazing, sweat is pouring, and the air feels like a giant oven. If you’re struggling to stay cool in this heat, you’re not alone.

But don’t worry, there are simple ways to beat the heat and stay comfortable. Here are some simple.

Drink Water Like Your Life Depends on It

In this kind of weather, dehydration can sneak up on you fast. Sweating makes your body lose fluids, so you need to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Aim for at least three litres daily, even if you don’t feel thirsty. To replace lost minerals, add a pinch of salt to your water or drink coconut water. Carry a water bottle everywhere—your body will thank you!

Take Cold Showers for Instant Relief

A cold shower is one of the fastest ways to cool down. It helps lower your body temperature, keeps your skin refreshed, and washes off all that sticky sweat. If you want to feel even cooler, use a cooling soap or body wash. Taking multiple short showers a day can keep the heat from overwhelming you.

Wear the Right Clothes

Your outfit can make all the difference. Choose loose, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen instead of tight, synthetic clothes that trap heat. Lighter colours reflect sunlight, while dark colours absorb it—so ditch black clothes unless you want to feel like you’re baking! If you’re stepping out, a wide-brimmed hat or sunglasses will also help shield you from the sun.

Avoid the Sun When It’s at Its Peak

The sun is most intense between 11 AM and 4 PM, so limit outdoor activities during those hours. If you must go out:

  • Walk in shaded areas or use an umbrella.
  • Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from sunburn.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
  • Stay in air-conditioned places if possible.

Get creative with cooling hacks

Not everyone has access to air conditioning, but there are still ways to stay cool:

  • Put a bowl of ice in front of your fan for an extra chill effect.
  • Sleep with a wet towel on your body for cooling relief.
  • Keep windows closed during the hottest part of the day and open them at night for ventilation.
