5 Things to Know About The New IGP Tunde Disu

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, as the new Inspector General of Police.

He takes over from Kayode Egbetokun, who has been removed from the position. Reports say the change followed a directive from the President for Egbetokun to resign.

Here are 5 things to know about him:

1.He is a career police officer with over three decades in the Force

Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has spent most of his career in operational and investigative roles, rising through the ranks to Assistant Inspector General before this appointment.

2.He recently led the FCID Annex at Alagbon, Lagos

In February 2026, he assumed duty as AIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, a major investigative hub. That background matters because the IGP job is heavily about investigations, discipline, and operational direction nationwide.

3.Lagos commuters may remember him as the former RRS Commander

Disu has been widely linked with the Lagos Rapid Response Squad leadership in several reports, a unit known for street-level policing and rapid response operations in Lagos.

4.He has also handled intelligence and specialised response assignments

He has been associated with leadership roles around specialised police operations and response work, giving him experience in high-pressure security environments beyond regular state command structures.

5.His academic background stands out for a top security post

Profiles on him have credited him with a first degree in English Education and additional postgraduate qualifications tied to administration and criminology-related fields, suggesting a blend of field experience and formal training that may shape his approach to reform, training, and internal discipline.
