5 Ways Tinubu Has Paid Tribute to Buhari So Far
When the news broke that former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari had passed away in London at the age of 82, it stirred emotions, triggered reflection and diverse reactions.
For President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Buhari wasn’t just a predecessor, he was an ally, a fellow party man, and a key figure in the political journey that led to the All Progressives Congress (APC) taking power in 2015.
Though Nigerians are divided in their judgment of Buhari’s legacy, Tinubu has made clear moves to show respect and honour to the late leader. Here are five notable actions Tinubu has taken so far in tribute to the man many called “Baba”:
Tinubu lowered the national flag in mourning
One of the earliest signs of national respect came when President Tinubu ordered that all flags across the country be flown at half-staff. This simple yet powerful gesture signals a period of mourning and is often reserved for individuals of great national importance.
By doing this, Tinubu placed Buhari in the same league as other Nigerian figures who shaped the country’s political history.
He sent Shettima to bring Buhari’s body home
Rather than delegating the duty to a low-level official, Tinubu sent Vice President Kashim Shettima to London to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria. Joining him on this sensitive mission was the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
This choice wasn’t just about protocol, it was a clear indication of the weight Tinubu attached to Buhari’s passing.
He called for an emergency FEC meeting
Tinubu summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Buhari’s honour. The FEC, which is the highest decision-making body in the executive arm of government, rarely meets outside its normal schedule unless something truly significant has occurred.
Holding such a session shows the depth of Tinubu’s respect and the symbolism of Buhari’s death to the current administration.
He organised a state funeral in daura
Tinubu’s government is also giving Buhari a state funeral, the highest form of honour for a public figure. Set in Buhari’s hometown of Daura in Katsina State, the burial is expected to attract past and present leaders, as well as foreign dignitaries.
A state funeral is not just about ceremony, it’s about acknowledging that the person being laid to rest left an indelible mark on the nation.
He sent personal condolences to Katsina and Buhari’s family
Beyond official protocols, Tinubu also reached out personally offering words of comfort to Buhari’s family, the government of Katsina, and the people of the state. He described Buhari as “a great man” and credited God for showing him mercy in his final days.
In Nigerian politics, where relationships are often transactional, such a gesture carries meaning especially considering their long political history together.
