5 World Leaders Who Paid Tribute to Former President Buhari

Following the news of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s passing on July 13, 2025, in London, tributes have poured in from around the world.

5 prominent heads of state and regional officials have publicly acknowledged Buhari’s influence on both Nigerian and African affairs.

India’s Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his “deep sorrow” at Buhari’s death, sending condolences to President Tinubu and the Nigerian people.

Modi highlighted Buhari’s commitment to democratic values and his efforts to strengthen ties between India and Nigeria during his two terms in office.

He noted that Buhari’s steadfast leadership had helped foster trade and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

African Union’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf 

Speaking on behalf of the African Union, Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf praised Buhari as a “visionary statesman” whose dedication to pan‑African unity inspired many.

Youssouf recalled Buhari’s support for continental initiatives, such as free movement of people and regional infrastructure projects, and said the AU would honour his memory by continuing to pursue greater integration among African nations.

ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray

Omar Touray, head of the Economic Community of West African States Commission, described Buhari as a “pillar of regional stability.” Touray noted Buhari’s decisive role in mediating conflicts in neighbouring countries, including his backing for peacekeeping efforts in The Gambia and the Sahel.

He said the ECOWAS family mourns a leader whose “diplomatic courage” helped preserve democracy and peace across West Africa.

Ethiopia’s Abiy Ahmed Ali

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia conveyed “heartfelt condolences” to the Buhari family and the people of Nigeria.

Abiy recalled working with Buhari on security cooperation against extremist groups and praised his willingness to engage in frank dialogue on regional challenges.

He added that Buhari’s principled approach to governance set an example for emerging African democracies.

Sierra Leone’s Julius Maada Bio

As Chairman of ECOWAS and President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio paid tribute to Buhari’s “unyielding sense of duty.” Bio highlighted their joint efforts to combat corruption and improve public accountability across the region.

He said Buhari’s legacy would live on in the strengthened institutions and anti‑graft measures he championed both at home and in West Africa.
