6 Mistakes That Make Your Electricity Bill Higher in Nigeria

Following the recent increase in electricity tariffs by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), many Nigerians are feeling the financial pressure.

The rates for Band A customers have surged, making it essential to manage energy use wisely to avoid further spikes in utility bills.

Here are 6 common mistakes that can lead to higher electricity costs and tips on how to avoid them.

1. Leaving Appliances On Unnecessarily

Many people leave lights, fans, and other appliances on when not in use, which can significantly increase energy costs. To reduce wastage, turn off all appliances at the power strip or ensure lights in unoccupied rooms are switched off.

2. Using Outdated or Inefficient Appliances

Older appliances tend to consume more electricity. Upgrading to newer models with an Energy Star label can lead to substantial energy savings over time.

3. Neglecting Appliance Maintenance

Poorly maintained appliances, like air conditioners with dirty filters, have to work harder and use more energy. Regular maintenance ensures they operate efficiently, keeping energy costs down.

4. Excessive Use of Air Conditioning

Air conditioners are major energy consumers. To cut costs, set them to a moderate temperature and use fans as an alternative to help circulate the air and cool rooms.

5. Continuing to Use Incandescent Bulbs

Incandescent bulbs use more electricity compared to their energy-saving counterparts like LED or CFL bulbs. Although the initial cost is higher, energy-efficient bulbs reduce long-term electricity usage and costs due to their lower power consumption and longer lifespan.

6. Overloading Circuits

Connecting too many devices to a single outlet or power strip can lead to increased energy consumption and inefficiencies. Ensure that circuits are not overloaded to optimize power usage and reduce costs.
