6 Nominations Surprisingly ‘Snubbed’ at AMVCA 2024

The glitz and glamour of the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) filled the air on a lively Saturday night at Eko Hotel, Lagos, on May 11, 2024. While the spotlight shone on the triumphant, some significant talents and remarkable works remained overshadowed.

As the 2024 AMVCA wrapped up, it became clear that not all deserving nominees walked away with the prized statues. Here’s a closer look at the notable snubs of this year’s ceremony, shedding light on the talent and hard work that perhaps didn’t receive the accolades they deserved.

Afamefuna

Kayode Kasum’s poignant film “Afamefuna,” despite its deep narrative and strong performances, found no favor in the eyes of the AMVCA judges. Nominated across four categories, including Best Supporting Actor, Best Lead Actor, Best Writing in a Movie, and Best Director, it surprisingly did not secure a single award. This film, which delved into rich cultural narratives, evidently deserved more recognition.

A Tribe Called Judah

Funke Akindele’s blockbuster “A Tribe Called Judah” was another shocker at the AMVCAs. With five nominations spanning from Best Supporting Actor to Best Movie, it seemed poised for at least one win. However, the film, which was a cinematic sensation grossing over ₦1.4 billion, walked away empty-handed, leaving fans and critics alike bewildered.

Mami Wata

“Mami Wata,” directed by CJ Obasi, was a unique narrative that captivated audiences with its mystical storytelling. With 11 nominations, it was the second-most nominated film but won only in the Best Makeup category, courtesy of Campbell Precious. The film’s artistic merit warranted broader recognition, yet it remained largely unacknowledged.

The Black Book

Editi Effiong’s “The Black Book,” a film made on a million-dollar budget and with compelling storytelling, was recognized with five nominations. However, it only won for Best Editing by Antonio Ribeiro. The minimal recognition for such a significant cinematic venture left many questioning the criteria of award selections.

Skinny Girl in Transit

Ndani TV’s beloved series “Skinny Girl in Transit” has consistently captured hearts with its relatable content and dynamic characters. Nominated for Best Writing in a TV Series, it faced a surprising defeat to Mona Ombogo for “Volume.” This loss was a letdown for its ardent fanbase, who had high expectations for its recognition.

The Real Housewives of Lagos (Season 2)

Despite the buzz and drama that “The Real Housewives of Lagos” brought to screens, the reality show’s second season failed to clinch the Best Unscripted Series award, losing out to “Gh Queens (Season 2).” This snub was a talking point, given the show’s high viewer engagement and popularity.
