7 Essential Items to Pack for a Protest

As the August 1st protests are currently taking place in some parts of the country, it’s essential to be thoroughly prepared and ensure you carry all necessary items with you.

Whether you are out for a long day in this tough weather, close to many people, or might face arrest, it is important to carry the right things.

Before going to a protest, think about what you will wear and take with you.

You should keep it simple but ensure you have a few important items for your safety and comfort.

Here are a few items to take along:

Water and Snacks

Always bring a water bottle with a sports top. This type of bottle is good for drinking and can also be used to wash out your eyes or wounds if needed. Bring some snacks like energy bars or fruit to keep your energy up.

Cash

Carry enough cash in small bills to buy food or pay for a taxi if needed. This is handy in places where you can’t use a card.

Your ID

Keep some form of identification on you, tucked away safely in a shoe or pocket.

Emergency Contacts

Know your emergency contacts by heart and write them down on a card or on your arm. This includes personal contacts and a number for local legal help. If you have a medical condition, wear a medical ID bracelet.

First Aid Basics

Bring a small first aid kit with bandaids, pain relievers, and any important medicines you might need if you stay out longer than planned.

Your Phone

Take your phone to communicate and take pictures or videos, but turn off location services and fingerprint or face unlock settings. This keeps you safe from being tracked or having your phone unlocked by police.

A Bag

If you can, keep everything in your pockets. If you need a bag, a small, clear backpack is often best—check the protest’s rules as some might not allow bags.
